How Does the PS2 4 Player Adapter Work?



Gaming is a social entertainment. Gathering a group of friends to compete in a first person shooter, a fighting tournament, or even a trivia game is part of what makes the medium so popular. However, some consoles were not built with social gaming in mind. Upon release, the Playstation 2 only allowed two players to play a game together due to the number of controller ports on the console. Not long after release, Sony released the PS2 4 player adapter, which expanded the number of controller ports on the system from two to four

Installation

The PS2 4 player adapter is plugged directly into an existing controller port on the console. The resulting number of ports is actually five, four on the adapter and the remaining open port on the console.

Expanded Memory

One of the features of the 4 player adapter is two additional memory card slots. These are used for other gamers to save their progress and statistics on their own cards, which are then transferred back to their home consoles.

Eight Controller Slots

Sports games as well as trivia games are designed for large groups with many people playing at one time. By plugging two 4 player adapters into the console, eight usable controller slots are created.

Correct Version

Sony released two different versions of the PS2 4 player adapter. The original is compatible with all PS2 models. A newer, slimmer adapter was created that is only compatible with the slimline model of the console.

Rumble

Regardless of which controller port is used, the 4 player adapter was designed to support the rumble feature present in all Playstation 2 dual shock controllers. This feature must also be present in the game being played.

PS2 4-Player Games



The PlayStation 2 (PS2) is the second generation of Sony's popular home gaming console and remains popular despite the release of the PlayStation 3. Although the console only features two controller ports, a multi-tap could be purchased, allowing up to four players to play at one time. Although not every game employed this feature, there were a number of releases that allowed four people to play together locally

Adventure Games

A number of adventure games support up to four players. Games such as "Champions of Norath" or "X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse" allow up to four players to join together and play cooperatively. Players work their way through levels destroying enemies and occasionally solving puzzles. These games often get easier with each additional player, however some games feature scaling where the number and difficulty of enemies adjusts for each added player.

Shooters

Many first- and third-person shooters support the multi-tap. "Timesplitters" and "Unreal Tournament" are popular franchises that both have PS2 iterations. These games split the screens into boxes to support up to four players as they attempt to destroy each other. Some unconventional shooters such as "Twisted Metal: Black," where players drive cars equipped with weapons, also feature four-player support.

Music Games

A fairly recent phenomenon in gaming is the advent of music games. These games allow players to form a band and take turns playing controllers shaped like instruments. Microphones, guitars and drums are all available, and the game will mark your progress as you progress from a garage rock outift to full-fledged rock stars. Rock Band and Guitar Hero are two of the most popular games of this type.

By far the most common game genre to feature four-player support is sports games. A large number of games including basketball games such as "NBA Street Vol 2.," baseball games such as "MVP 06," car racing games such as "Nascar Thunder 2004" and several others all feature competitive and co-operative four-player support. You can play through a season with a group of friends or set up tournaments to see who is the best.
